Frequently Asked Questions |
|
Q:
Is it a good idea to take small children camping?
A:
Most definitely. Kids love to learn and kids love to be outdoors. Nature
is one of the best places to teach children. There are so many amazing
things to see and do. Imagine the excitement of a child when they spot a
deer or other type of wildlife. Or their enthusiasm to locate varies items
on a hike or scavenger hunt. Or the anticipation of catching their own
fish. And how about the creativity they have with leaves, sticks,
pinecones etc. when doing outdoor crafts. The list goes on and on. The
outdoors is also a good place for them to learn life lessons such as team
work, self confidence and self worth, awareness, innovation and the
respect for nature and others to name a few. A lot of quality time
can be spent with your children in the outdoors. Also see the article Camping
with your Kids for more ideas.

Q:
What do you do if it rains while you
are camping?
A:
Well, we can't control the weather so we just have to make the best
of it. Rain or any other type of bad weather can really alter outdoor
plans. It can be nice and beautiful one moment and turn dark and dangerous
the next. A little planning and preparation can reduce the problems and
the disappointment of bad weather on your activities. Anticipate the
possibility. Take steps to minimize its impact on your campsite and have
alternate activities planned. Be sure to consider every ones safety when
making decisions. The article Rain,
Rain Go Away addresses this issue in a bit more detail.

Q:
Do you have any tips to make showering at
campgrounds more convenient?
A:
Convenient they are not. But after a full day of activity in the
heat of the summer they are definitely necessary. Conditions of bathhouse
facilities vary at each location. Some are better then others. Check out
some simple tips at Taking
a Campground Shower. Always do your part to help keep the
facilities clean and always be respectful of other campers.

Q:
What items do I need to take when I
go on a camping trip?
A:
The things you will need to take with you depends on what type of
camping you want to do, the time of year and also on the activities you
plan on doing. For example, if you are backpacking you will have to take
more practical type items and be more concerned with weight and size. If
you are camping with children, you should consider comfort and also
bring more activity type items to keep them busy. Check out our general checklists
and customize them to fit your particular needs.

Q:
Do all campgrounds allow you to have
campfires?
A:
This varies by location but many private campgrounds allow
campfires in established fire rings on your campsite. If you are planning
to cook your meals over a fire, we recommend that this be verified when
you make your reservations and at check in. Also be sure to check for
limitations due to drought conditions or high winds etc. Some campgrounds
have centralized fire circles where they schedule all camp campfires.
Refer to the How to Build a Campfire
article and be sure to practice safety when using a fire.

Q:
How can I become an outdoor volunteer?
A:
There are many national, state and local parks and other organizations
that look for volunteers to help with various projects. These projects may
include trail maintenance, campground host, program leaders, public
awareness, project labors etc. Being a volunteer can be very rewarding.
Not only are you helping to preserve our natural environment, but you
enjoy what you're doing and also are given the opportunity to meet many
interesting people.

Q:
What is the best way to cook if you don't
own a camp stove?
A:
A campfire of course. There
are many possible ways to cook with a campfire, but my personal favorite
is foil cooking. The are a tremendous number of mouth watering meals you
can make using this method. Use any combination of eggs, meat and
seasonings and you have breakfast. Use any combination of meat, vegetables
and seasonings and you have lunch or dinner. Corn on the cob or potatoes
make great side dishes. And of course we can't forget the banana boats for
an evening snack. You may wish to check out the article Cooking
Methods and the Recipe area for some
additional information and ideas.

Q:
What sorts of things can we do on our
camping trip?
A:
There are an endless number of things to do while camping. You can
enjoy any of the many related outdoor activities such as hiking, biking,
backpacking, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, swimming, bird watching
etc. You could also participate in any number of sports, roller blade and
other games. How about outdoor crafts or star gazing. In the winter you
could cross country or down hill ski, go snowshoeing or ice skate. Another
great idea is to experience something in the area you are staying. Check
out the state tourism sites in our Destination
section. Many state and national
parks have activities or ranger programs. And finally check with the
campground where you are staying. Many times they have organized
activities or may be able to point out area attractions.
