The
Rocky Mountain National Park encompasses 415 square miles of majestic
beauty. The numerous high mountain peaks offers breathtaking views of the
wilderness below and all around. Over 3 million visitors come to this park
each year to drive and experience its winding roads and hike its trails.
Longs
Peak at 14,255 feet is the highest mountain in the park. The Trail Ridge
Road and the Old Fall River Road are used by many visitors in the summer
to explore the park and to see the alpine tundra, which is the land above
the trees. The vistas and many wildflowers are nothing less than
spectacular. The Continental Divide runs northwest to southeast through
the park. There are about 150 lakes and many rivers and streams throughout
the park. Rushing water and waterfalls can be heard from just about
everywhere. Rocky
Mountain National Park is known as one of America's premier wildlife
watching destinations, showcasing herds of elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer,
moose and many birds to name just a few. Weather conditions can vary
throughout the park and can be extreme at times. Be sure to plan
accordingly. Along with the many other typical park recreational
activities, there are several accessible hiking trails available for the
average visitors to experience the parks scenery. In addition, there are
346 miles of hiking trails that lead to various lakes, waterfalls and
summits.
